Alaverdi is situated at the bottom of the Debed Canyon. The town itself is a bit bleak with a semi-abandoned copper smelter right in the centre. However, the canyon and surrounding landscape are beautiful - my pictures don't do it justice. We stayed at a guesthouse for 4 nights and explored the surrounding towns and monasteries while we were there.

This old cable car connects the town centre by the river with the Sarahart neighbourhood on the upper plateau. It wasn't operating when we visited.
